These websites are primarily concerned with privacy rights, some address First Amendment issues.  For related information, please see Freedom of Information and Public Interest Organizations.


Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT)

•  "The Center for Democracy and Technology works to promote democratic values and constitutional liberties in the digital age" and "... seeks practical solutions to enhance free expression and privacy in global communications technologies"
•  Concentrates on the following issues: data privacy, government surveillance, free speech, copyright, domain names
•  "Resource Library" links to over 300 sites concerned with privacy issues, privacy rights organizations, security and related topics
•  Each topic in "Resource Library" links to news on the topic, pending and existing legislation, resources, sub-topics
•  Primarily U.S. in scope, with some international coverage
•  "Publications" include articles, reports, speeches/testimony; many of these may be downloaded
•  Excellent; one of the best sites for privacy and related First Amendment issues; extensive coverage for its issues/topics of concern; easy-to-navigate


Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC)

•  "EPIC is a public interest research center ... established in 1994 to focus public attention on emerging civil liberties issues, and to protect privacy, the First Amendment, and constitutional values"
•  "Privacy A to Z" links to over 50 topics on privacy issues, including such little-known topics as digital cash, face recognition, profiling
•  The comprehensiveness of topics examined in "Privacy A to Z" varies; some receive extensive discussion, while others do not; most link to news on the topic, legislation, court cases, additional resources
•  "EPIC Online Guide to Privacy Resources" links to the following resources: organizations, printed publications, U.S. privacy sites, international privacy sites, conferences/events, mailing lists/electronic news groups
•  Also provides "EPIC Reports," some of which are downloadable, while other are available for purchase
•  Searchable
•  Includes information on EPIC's initiatives, policies, services
•  Outstanding; does an excellent job of examining a wide variety of topics not often covered elsewhere and brings them together in one place; easy-to-navigate


Privacy Foundation (PF)

•  "The Privacy Foundation exists to educate the public, in part by conducting research into communications technologies and services that may pose a threat to personal privacy"
•  "Privacy Watch" issues advisories/reports on emerging and existing privacy issues
•  "Privacy Foundation Legal Database" monitors lawsuits for the following areas: law enforcement, workplace surveillance, Social Security numbers, schools, health records, corporate issues; searchable as well as browsable
•  Links to other privacy advocacy organizations, government sites, industry sites
•  Includes a glossary
•  Includes information on membership, PF's initiatives, staffing, FAQs
•  While not comprehensive, this site is does an excellent job for what it covers; easy-to-navigate


Privacy International (PI)

•  "Privacy International (PI) is a human rights group formed in 1990 as a watchdog on surveillance by governments and corporations"
•  Funded by "foundations, academic establishments, non-government organizations"
•  Concentrates on the following issues: cybercrime, freedom of information, ID cards, Mondex and anonymous digital money, outsourcing, telephone tapping and encryption, video surveillance
•  International news coverage of privacy issues
•  Issues reports on "Privacy and Human Rights," in conjunction with EPIC (see above)
•  Includes information about PI's campaigns/initiatives, conferences, "electronic archive" (international privacy agreements, country reports) and the annual "Big Brother Award"
•  Excellent resource for news and analysis of privacy rights worldwide


Privacy Rights Clearinghouse (PRC)

•  "The Privacy Rights Clearinghouse is a nonprofit consumer education, research, and advocacy program," whose resources "... empower you to take action to control your personal information by providing practical tips on privacy protection"
•  Founded in 1992 by Beth Givens, this is one of the first and foremost privacy rights websites on the Internet
•  "Fact Sheets" (24 in all) outline procedures for dealing with a wide variety of privacy issues/problems including credit history, harassing phone calls, medical records access, stalking; special attention is given to "identity theft"
•  Each "Fact Sheet" offers extensive, practical advice for the specific issue/problem at-hand; explains often-complex issues in clear language accessible to the layman
•  "Fact Sheets" are also available in Spanish ("Paginas Informativas")
•  Also links to numerous privacy rights organizations, academic sites/resources, consumer sites, legal resources
•  Searchable
•  Includes information on PRC's initiatives/programs, policies, services
•  Outstanding; this is one of the first sites to turn to for privacy issues; it's certainly one of the most comprehensive and one of the best currently available


Privacy.org

•  "The Source for News, Information and Action," Privacy.org is a joint project of the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) and Privacy International (PI)
•  "News Resources" links to 50 news organizations/publications worldwide
•  "Action Items" links to privacy-advocacy sites which encourage public participation and response to governmental privacy policies and legislation
•  "Privacy Resources" links to sites for consumer issues, children's rights, research, "tools"
•  Sponsored by two of the foremost privacy organizations, this excellent resource is one of the best sites for keeping track of the latest on privacy rights issues

•  Sponsored by the Law Library Resource Xchange (LLRX); edited by Sabrina I. Pacifici
•  Links to 17 LLRX documents (from 1997 to the present) for the following topics: social networking, USA PATRIOT Act, Internet issues, workplace monitoring, related topics
•  Each document consists of an essay which examines a specific issue; each essay provides links to appropriate websites and lists related resources
•  Each essay is clearly written by a legal professional or law librarian
•  A few of the older essays may appear to be somewhat dated, but are still useful for examining and analyzing the legal issues or situations discussed
•  Great place for legal overviews of privacy issues
