NATIONAL, STATE & LOCAL INFORMATION

These websites encompass multi-jurisdictional resources.  For example, some sites may be for both federal and state resources, some for state and local resources, or others for all three—federal, state and local resources.

Demographics and Statistics

•  Sponsored by the University of Colorado Libraries, Boulder
•  Links to selected links for federal websites for state, county and local information
•  Browsable
•  Last modified June 2000; will not be updated but existing links are still active
•  Not for in-depth research but a good site for quick facts

Direct Search: State, Province and City

•  Maintained by Gary Price, George Washington University Library
•  "... A compilation of many specialized searchable/interactive databases"
•  Includes "Meta Resources" (state offices, professional organizations by function or topic), "Major Cities," and "State & Local Governments"
•  No site annotations, but well-organized for efficient browsing
•  Availability of site information varies from state-to-state
•  Also links to Canadian governmental information
•  Particularly useful for state databases for incorporation records, lobbyists, medical boards, home inspectors and additional hard-to-find topics

Free Internet Access to Public Records

•  Sponsored by BRB Publications
•  Links to "... nearly 2,050 state, county and federal (court) URL's where you can access public record information for free"
•  Type of information on a link may include assessor's records, property taxes, births, marriages, divorces, business incorporations, criminal records
•  Availability of site information varies from state-to-state
•  Offers free subscription to "Sources," a public records newsletter
•  Links to BRB Publications information for fee-based online services and publications
•  Very useful for finding links for types of records not accessible elsewhere

GovEngine.com

•  Maintained by GovEngines, Inc., this site is "... a Florida non-profit organization dedicated to promoting e-Government initiatives and interconnectivity between federal, state and local levels of government with the citizens of Our Great Nation"
•  Extensive links to official sites for federal, state and local government for the U.S. and its territories
•  May be browsed by level of government or by state
•  While most of the links to websites are available at other sites, this is a particularly well-organized arrangement and its ease-of-navigation is a welcome change from the somewhat labyrinthine structure of kindred sites
•  Excellent; particularly useful for links to independent agencies, government corporations, and boards/commissions

Guides to Public Records

•  Maintained by the University of Colorado Libraries, Boulder
•  "Print Guides and Directories" provides a short bibliography of public record print sources, many of which may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
•  "Online Information" links to "finding aides" for state/country/local websites, place names, directories of online public records, campaign finance (federal) and additional sites
•  Short annotations accompany most links
•  Very useful; for a site that's not comprehensive, its site selection is excellent, especially on links to directories of online public records

State and Local Government on the Net

•  Sponsored by Piper Resources
•  "A directory of official state, county, and city government sites"; currently over 9,100 links
•  Also links to federal sites which encompass state/local information and to professional organizations dealing with state/regional/local government
•  Standard state entry includes the following: state home page, state-wide offices, legislature and judicial system links, boards/commissions, regional authorities within the state
•  One of the earliest state government information directories on the Net; still a great site for comprehensive information

State and Local Governments (Library of Congress)

•  "A Library of Congress Internet Resource Page"
•  Links to gateway sites for state/local government
•  Also links to each state's government homepage; includes limited links to regions and municipalities for many, but not all, states
•  Not extensive, but very useful for quick research

Virtual Gumshoe: Investigative Resources on the Web

•  Maintained by Dave and Linda Guss
•  Formerly known as "Webgator"
•  This unusual site links to almost 70 types of records and investigative websites
•  Standard record sources (courts, statutes, government directories) are well-represented, but the distinguishing feature of this site are the numerous links to hard-to-find sources (criminal histories, motor vehicle records, unclaimed property, voter records, etc.)
•  Great site for its inclusion of uncommon sources of information
