HOSPITALITY: GENERAL RESOURCES

This guide highlights comprehensive hospitality resources, i.e., sites which are “gateways” or ones that include resources which discuss multiple sectors of the industry (“general resources,” foodservice, lodging, meetings/conventions, travel/tourism, etc.).

Business & Company Resource Center

• Johnson & Wales University database restricted to the J&W community and accessible from the "Databases" link on J&W Univ. Library's homepage
• Provides comprehensive information on over 700,000 companies, domestic and international
• Profile for each company includes contact information, SIC/NAICS codes, annual sales revenue, number of employees, year founded, web address and company status (parent or subsidiary)
• Public company profiles many include most or all of the following: news/articles, company history, investment reports, financials, rankings, suits/claims, product lines; profiles of private companies may not contain all of the above information
• Also includes industry overviews, links to professional associations/organizations; has company comparison capability
• This outstanding, comprehensive database is indispensable for any sort of company research (including companies for all sectors of the hospitality industry); industry research features also provide valuable information on a company’s standing within an industry as well as industry trends and reports


Hospitality and Tourism

• Maintained by the University of Wisconsin-Stout Library/Learning Center
• This guide discusses the print, database and Internet resources available in the Library/Learning Center
• Print resources include bibliographies, dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, periodicals; many of these may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Access to databases is restricted to the University of Wisconsin-Stout community; many of these may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Links to city/destination travel guides, directories for lodging, parks, restaurants, casinos, cruises, tourist attractions

• Each sector is subdivided into sub-sectors and includes industry journals/publications, professional associations/organizations, vendors; additional resources may also be included (these vary depending on the nature of the sector)
• “General Hospitality and Business Resources” links to over 600 sites for industry-wide professional associations/organizations, franchising, demographic/statistics, publications, career information, technology (primarily vendors)
• No evaluative commentary
• Scope is primarily the U.S., with limited international links
• Outstanding; one of the best resources for locating professional and commercial information on all sectors of the hospitality industry


Hospitality Management Guide

• Maintained by the Shady Grove Library, University of Maryland Libraries
• A directory of database, print and Internet resources, this extensive guide discusses many of the most authoritative hospitality resources
• Print resources include monograms, guides/handbooks, journals; many of these may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Access to databases and e-journals is restricted to the University of Maryland academic community; many of these may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Also identifies video resources
• Excellent annotations accompany most citations and links
• Updated August 2004
• Outstanding; this is one of the best academic pages for hospitality industry resources; well-organized, clearly-written and easy to navigate


Hospitality Net

• This site is one of the first web resources for all sectors of the hospitality industry; primarily a resource for industry practitioners
• Links a wide of cost-free sites for a wide variety of industry resources, including industry news (archived from 1995 to the present), financial news (archived from 1995 to the present), market reports, job opportunities, information about hospitality education, industry events
• “Industry Links” link to professional associations/organizations, hotel chains/brands, industry publications, “hotel schools”/universities; most sites are accompanied by excellent evaluative commentary (this feature alone makes this page worthwhile to visit)
• Searchable
• Free online newsletter (registration required)
• “Post/Submit Content” allows users to post market reports, “editorial content,” job opportunities/resumes, associations news/publications; there is a charge, however, for
• commercial press releases, event/conference postings, “Marketplace” (commercial sites)
• Outstanding; one of the best sources for all-around industry information that is current and pertinent to practical industry information and resources; also, very useful for anyone with a general interest in the field


Industry-Related Subject Guides

• Maintained by the Nestle Library (NL), Cornell University School of Hotel Administration
• Provides guides to the library’s resources for the following hospitality-related sectors: airlines, bed/breakfasts, club management, cookery, cruise lines, foodservice, gaming/casinos, lodging, meetings/incentives/conventions/exhibitions (MICE), spas, travel/tourism
• Each guide discusses appropriate print, database and Internet hospitality-related resources appropriate to its sector
• Print resources (which may include directories, dictionaries, handbooks, encyclopedias, statistical sources) may be found in many academic libraries or large public libraries
• Databases are restricted to the Cornell University community; these may be found in many academic libraries or large public libraries
• Each guide’s Internet links are primarily to professional associations/organizations; other links are minimal
• All guides were prepared or updated between December 2003 and November 2004
• Outstanding; these guides are well-organized and clearly written; among the best academic guides currently available


Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH)

• Maintained by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), U.S. Department of Labor
• This online version of the popular print publication provides up-to-date profiles of hundreds of occupations
• Includes profiles for the following hospitality occupations: foodservice, gaming, hotel/lodging, travel tourism
• Each occupational profile includes “Nature of the Work,” working conditions, employment outlook, wages, “Sources of Additional Information”
• Also links to BLS data on employment projections and “Career Guide to Industries,” which provides an analytical overview of 45 basic industries
• Offers additional information on BLS’s initiatives, programs, publications and services
• Searchable
• Updated biennially, the OOH is one of the federal government’s most popular resources; an excellent resource for anyone researching occupational data in the hospitality industry (as well as many others)


Tourism, Hospitality and Leisure Journals

• Created and maintained by Alastair Morrison, Tourism & Hospitality Research Center, Purdue University
• Links to the homepages of 88 refereed hospitality, leisure/recreation and travel/tourism journals
