COMPETITIVE INTELLIGENCE
The following types of websites were utilized in compiling this guide: academic departmental and academic library pages, professional associations/organizations, commercial sites. This guide was created with Internet accessibility in mind; all sites are free-of-charge or commercial sites which contain significant free content.
Many business “gateways”/portals include information on locating and utilizing competitive intelligence. It is also good to remember that since there is a great deal of information available on this subject, there is an inevitable amount of overlap and duplication.

Business/Competitive Intelligence Resources
• Developed and maintained by Judy O’Dell, Central Michigan University (CMU) Libraries
• Discusses the print, database and Internet resources in the CMU Libraries
• Resources include the following: associations/organizations, public records, books, articles in databases, search engines, “monitoring consumer trends on the Internet,” news/current awareness, portals

• Excellent; not extensive, but offers a great selection of links to online resources; the resources for monitoring consumer trends is especially useful
Competitive Intelligence
• Maintained by the Horn Library, Babson College
• Discusses the database and Internet resources for competitive intelligence in the Horn Library
• Topics covered include company research, finding information in financial and business news sources, patent information, “locating experts”
• Databases are restricted to the Babson community; they may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Brief but incisive annotations accompany each citation/link
• Excellent; not extensive, but very useful for beginning research

• Examines researching companies and their competitors, industry information and locating information from business news/press resources

• Annotations are confined primarily to databases
• Excellent; not extensive, but the real value of this site is the breadth of its coverage for print resources

• Economic/business component of this directory of links provides access to commercial sites, sites concerned with intellectual property, professional associations/organizations, sources for journals/articles/papers
• Competitive intelligence resources which focus on national security/military applications include federal agencies/sub-agencies, security-related congressional hearings, legal issues/regulations, “think tank” studies, “infrastructure protection, “technology transfer” and its impact on national security
• No annotations
• Excellent; not comprehensive, but it’s a great resource for locating hard-to-find information on the economic ramifications of competitive intelligence and national security
Internet Intelligence Index

• “Designed to help you gather information from a wide variety of public services, in support of your competitive intelligence efforts”
• “Contains links to over 600 intelligence-related Internet sites, covering everything from macro-economic data to individual patent and stock quote information”
• “General Business Internet Resources” provides links to 25 types of business information (primarily for locating various aspects of company information, news)
• “Industry-Internet Related Resources” links to sites for 29 specific industries in the energy, finance, manufacturing and service sectors; comprehensiveness of links varies by industry
• “International Internet Resources” links to a limited number of categories of regions and specific countries
• Short annotations accompany almost all links

• Outstanding; this is a great resource for beginning research since it gathers information together in one place for a variety of general and industry-specific resources
Proprietary Information & Competitive Intelligence

• This pathfinder concentrates on researching proprietary information/competitive intelligence from databases and Internet resources
• Excellent commentary on methods/procedures for locating appropriate information for this topic
• Links to sites for the following: company research (SEC filings, annual reports) press releases/business news, guides, product catalogs, associations/societies; also includes an outstanding section on researching patent information
• Databases are restricted to the UTA community; they may be found in academic libraries or large public libraries
• Outstanding; this is a brief but exceptionally well-written guide; does an admirable job of organizing a complex subject into a coherent and incisive analysis; highly recommended
