American Authors on the Web

• Maintained by Mitsuhara Matsuoka, Nagoya University, Japan
• Presents a chronology of 786 authors (primarily novelists and poets) from 1580 to the present day
• Links for approximately 250 authors, ranging from a few per individual to up to 20 (Stephen King)
• Links may include biographical website, criticism website, website devoted to a particular work of the author, miscellaneous websites
• Provides links to 99 general resource sites (discussion forums, interviews, literary schools, sub-group literature (based on gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity)
• Although only a third of the authors listed have links, these should be quite useful, particularly for the nineteenth and twentieth century


Authors on the Web

• Provides hundreds of links to biographical sites for authors
• "...Biographies vary in quality, timeliness, length, and authority"
• Particularly good for links to international authors and obscure authors
• In the process of providing links to Nobel Prize-winners in literature


British & Irish Authors on the Web

• Maintained by Misuhara Matsuoka, Nagoya University, Japan
• Presents a chronology of 805 authors (primarily novelists, poets and playwrights) from 600 to the present day
• Links for approximately 275 authors, ranging from a few per individual to 48 (William Shakespeare)
• Link includes biographical website, criticism website, website devoted to a particular work of the author, miscellaneous websites
• Despite the fact that there are links to only a third of the authors, many links to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries are especially useful


Gale's Literary Resource Center

• Johnson & Wales University database restricted to the JWU community
• Consists of three literary databases, two of which (Contemporary Authors and Dictionary of Literary Biography) provide biographical information
• Authors profiled are past and present and from around the world
• Approximately 100,000 authors are profiled


Literary Web: Authors

• Maintained by Bonnie Hanks
• This small site (only 7 links) has provided access to the some of the best author sites on the Web
• Insightful annotations accompany each link
• If time is pressing, this should be the site to go to, for quick research


Twentieth Century Authors

• Created by Michelle Mach and Cynthia D. Shirkey
• Published in the December 1999 edition of College & Research Libraries News
• Presents a well-organized essay on the "ins and outs" of conducting author research
• Topical areas include: Starting Points: Meta Sites and Directories; Overviews of 20th Century America; Lists of 20th Century Works; Area Studies and Genres; Theory/Criticism; Journals and Zines
• Short, informative annotations accompany all links
• Also includes mail lists, newsgroups and virtual communities
• Last updated May 2007
• Short but excellent guide to the best sites on this topic
