Step 1. Know Identify your topic

When you first start your research project, make sure you understand your assignment.

Did your instructor assign a specific topic or can you pick your own?
How many pages or words do you need to write? How much information will you need to meet this requirement?
Do you need to include specific types of sources? (e.g. scholarly journal, encyclopedia, book, etc.)
When is the assignment due? How much time do you have to research?
When in doubt. Always double check with your instructor.

Browse our current magazines and newspapers or the circulating collection to see what catches your eye.
Look at Opposing Viewpoints and Facts on File. These databases feature articles on current event topics and controversial social issues.
Browse the JWU Providence Campus Subject Sites on Controversial Issues.

Once you have selected a topic to research, consider the following:

Does the topic really interest you? Research is always easier if the topic holds your attention.
What do you know about this topic? Such as, what discipline does it fall under (e.g. arts, business, culinary, education, history, hospitality, science, etc.)? Is your subject a new or old concept? Have you heard about it in the news recently?

Now that you have established a topic, think about the research questions that you want to answer. What is it about the topic you want to know? What terms, concepts, or keywords will you initially use to search in the Library Catalog and Databases? Next, you’ll want to brainstorm additional keywords.

Topic: Endangered Species Act
Research Questions: What is the Endangered Species Act? What is the goal of this legislation? What animals are on the endangered species list? How does an animal get added/removed from the list?
Keywords: Endangered Species Act, Animals, Legislation
